A scientist in Center for Materials Technology of Agency for Technology Assessment and Application, Dr. Eng Ratno Nuryadi (Former Chair of ISTECS-Japan 2006-2008, red) can create a microscope to observe the structure of tiny materials. “To observe the structure of materials in nano or 10 to the power of minus nine meters, a special equipment that was not available in Indonesia is required. That device could only be imported and the price per unit is approximately Rp2-3 billion,” said Ratno who became the winner of Indonesian Young Researchers’ Choice (PPMI) XIV in Engineering. Concerned with this condition, Ratno who won a PPMI award for his paper titled “Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) Manufacture and its Application in Nanotechnology” then invented a miscroscope for tiny materials called Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). “It is the first nano microscope made in Indonesia with only Rp50 million fund and it was made with simple materials,” explained the man born in Bantul, 17 October 1973 while promoting the microscope after receiving n award from the Head of Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Umar A Jenie and Rp25 million prize. The nano microscope, he describes, is not a regular microscope because it uses a material touch technology like a needle that will explore the structure of the material and then display the structure on a computer screen using certain software. Its way of working resemble that of other nano microscopes in the world. When asked about the reliability of his device, he said the microscope has worked normally according the principles, but technically, it needs to be optimized more so that the appearance can be better. Nanotechnology, he explained, is a technology that is developing fast in the world because materials made by nanotechnology will have different charaacteristics and functions than materials made without nanotechnology. Bagaimana caranya meneliti material berukuran nanometer atau sepermiliar meter? Peneliti Pusat Teknologi Material BPPT Dr Eng Ratno Nuryadi (mantan Ketua ISTECS-Jepang 2006-2008, red) bisa menciptakan mikroskop untuk melihat struktur materi renik tersebut.

“Untuk melihat struktur materi seukuran nano atau 10 pangkat minus sembilan meter, perlu perlengkapan khusus yang tak ada di Indonesia. Alat itu hanya bisa diimpor dengan harga satu unitnya mencapai sekitar Rp2-3 miliar,” kata Ratno yang menjadi pemenang Pemilihan Peneliti Muda Indonesia (PPMI) XIV bidang Ilmu Pengetahuan Teknik dan Rekayasa.

Prihatin atas kondisi itu, Ratno yang memenangkan penghargaan PPMI dengan makalah berjudul “Manufactur Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) dan Aplikasinya pada Nanoteknologi” itu kemudian menciptakan mikroskop material renik yang disebut AFM (Atomic Force Microscope).

“Ini adalah mikroskop nano pertama yang diciptakan di Indonesia dengan modal sekitar Rp50 juta saja dan dibuat dengan bahan-bahan sederhana,” kata pria kelahiran Bantul 17 Oktober 1973 itu sambil berpromosi usai menerima penghargaan dari Kepala LIPI Umar A Jenie serta uang tunai Rp25 juta.

Mikroskop nano itu, urainya, bukan mikroskop biasa, karena menggunakan teknologi peraba materi seperti jarum yang akan menyusuri struktur materi dan kemudian menampilkan strukturnya di layar komputer dengan menggunakan software tertentu. Cara kerjanya mirip perlengkapan mikroskop nano yang ada di dunia.

Ketika ditanya soal kehandalan alatnya, ia mengatakan, mikroskopnya itu prinsipnya sudah bekerja secara normal, namun secara teknis perlu dioptimalisasi lagi agar penampilannya lebih baik.

Nanoteknologi, jelasnya, merupakan teknologi yang sedang berkembang pesat di dunia karena materi yang disusun dengan teknologi nano akan memiliki karakter dan fungsi berbeda dengan materi yang tersusun tanpa teknologi nano.
